Why the NTG generation matters
Mercedes navigation updates are tied to the vehicle head unit generation. A code generated for NTG5.5 will not be suitable for an NTG6 or NTG7 map package, even if the VIN is correct. The same applies to the region and map version: all three parts must match the update that the car is trying to install.
Mercedes owners often see different names for the same idea. The car or update tool may refer to a Map License Key, Navi PIN, activation code, PIN code or map update code. In practice, the order should be based on the vehicle VIN, the NTG generation, the map region and the version shown by the update package.
Quick visual checks
- NTG5.5: late COMAND Online generation. It is common on many late pre-MBUX cars and usually does not have the first-generation MBUX home screen.
- NTG6: first MBUX generation. A wide landscape centre display, a touchpad on the centre console and the first "Hey Mercedes" experience are common visual clues.
- NTG7: second MBUX generation. Many cars use a larger portrait-style centre touchscreen and a newer touch-focused interface.
These checks are useful, but they are not a replacement for confirming the exact system before payment. Retrofitted vehicles, imported cars and facelift models can make visual identification less obvious.
Use the model generation as a guide
Model generation is a practical starting point. NTG6 appeared with the 2018 A-Class generation and then spread across many MBUX Gen 1 vehicles. NTG7 started with newer MBUX Gen 2 vehicles such as W223 S-Class, W206 C-Class, W214 E-Class and newer electric models. NTG5.5 covers many late COMAND Online vehicles before the MBUX transition.
There are exceptions, especially around facelift years. If your car is close to a generation change, confirm using the head unit screen, the map update prompt, the VIN/data card or support.
Check the update prompt
The most reliable practical check is the actual update flow. Prepare the correct USB map package first, insert it into the car and wait for the navigation update prompt. The screen normally makes it clear whether the car is asking for a map license key for the package you are installing.
Do not buy a code before you know the exact region and map version. If the vehicle later asks for a different version or rejects the USB as incompatible, the generated code may not be useful.
When to ask support
Ask support before ordering if the vehicle is imported, if the map region was changed, if the car has retrofit work, or if you do not know whether the system is COMAND or MBUX. Send the VIN, a photo of the system information screen and a photo of the map update prompt if possible.
A few minutes of checking is better than ordering a code for the wrong NTG generation. The order form requires VIN, device type, region and version because all of them affect the final result.
Before you order
- Confirm the VIN has 17 valid characters.
- Confirm the NTG generation: NTG5.5, NTG6 or NTG7.
- Confirm the map region supported by the vehicle.
- Confirm the exact map version from the USB package or vehicle prompt.
- Use an email address you can access immediately after payment.
