Mercedes Map License Key Invalid

A rejected map code usually points to a mismatch between VIN, NTG generation, region, version or the prepared USB package.

What "license key invalid" usually means

A Mercedes map license key is not a generic password. It is generated for a specific set of details. If any detail is wrong, the vehicle can reject the code even when the code itself was created correctly.

The most common causes are a wrong VIN, wrong NTG generation, wrong map region, wrong map version or an update package that does not match the head unit. The fix is to identify which part does not match before trying again.

Check the VIN first

Mercedes VINs are 17 characters long. Letters should be entered in uppercase, and the VIN should not contain I, O or Q. If one character is wrong, the activation result can be tied to the wrong vehicle.

Compare the VIN on the order with the vehicle documents or the VIN shown by diagnostics. Do not rely on a manually typed value if you can copy it from a reliable source.

Check NTG generation, region and version

  • NTG generation: NTG5.5, NTG6 and NTG7 use different update logic.
  • Region: the code must match the region of the map package and the region accepted by the head unit.
  • Version: a code for V25 will not normally unlock a different version such as V24 or V26.
  • USB package: the package installed in the car must be complete and compatible.

Imported vehicles

Imported vehicles are a frequent source of region mismatch. A car currently located in Europe may still have a Japanese, Korean, North American or Southeast Asian navigation configuration. In that case, a local-region USB package can be detected as invalid or the code can be rejected.

If you are dealing with an imported vehicle, contact support before ordering and include the original market if known.

Firmware and version compatibility

Some head units may reject a very new map package if the multimedia firmware is too old. This is more likely when a car has not been updated for a long time or when a large version jump is attempted.

If the car rejects the update before the key prompt, the problem may be the map package or head unit compatibility rather than the activation code.

What to send to support

If the code is rejected, send the order email, VIN, selected NTG generation, region, version and photos of the vehicle screen. A clear photo of the error message is often enough to identify whether the mismatch is region, version or vehicle data.

Do not keep entering random codes. Repeated attempts do not fix a region or version mismatch and can make troubleshooting harder.
